Session 11: Next Generation Mouse Models in the New Era of Precision Medicine

Animal models in biomedical research provide essential insights into a systems-level understanding of biological processes and mechanisms of disease that are unable to be revealed solely by molecular, cellular, or tissue/organ studies alone. In particular, mice have become the quintessential model organism to study pathogenesis, especially with regard to in vivo annotation of gene function in health and disease. To date, however, the scientific value of mouse models has been in basic, applied, and preclinical research. This session will reveal a more forward-looking approach in which mouse models can have immediate, real-time clinical utility to inform disease diagnostics and patient care in the new paradigm of precision medicine.
