Session 1: Opening Session & Introduction to Diabetes

The opening session outlines the goals, format, and learning objectives of this program. This session introduces the topic of diabetes: different types and diagnostic criteria of diabetes, characteristic features of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, diabetic complications, importance of glucose homeostasis and how insulin regulates our glucose levels, and insulin resistance and its role in development of type 2 diabetes. The session ends with a discussion on how to prevent and manage type 2 diabetes using lifestyle modifications (healthy diet and exercise) and different types of drugs.
