One of the major diseases associated with type 2 diabetes is fatty liver, leading to inflammation and “gummy” lesions known as fibrosis. Together, these symptoms in the liver are known as nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). This is a major health problem since NASH is now becoming the most common reason for needing a liver transplant in the USA. We are developing a therapy for NASH that involves a completely new type of medicine in the form of RNA, which need be injected only a couple times a year. Progress is exciting and we hope to be testing this therapy in monkeys in the near future.
